During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Iloilo City’s Uswag Community Kitchens, supported by generous donors, have supplied over two million meals to Ilonggos in need. As one of the Iloilo City Government’s most effective initiatives, the Uswag Community Kitchen (UCK) was established with the aim of ensuring that no Ilonggo goes hungry.

The Uswag Community Kitchen serves as a concrete testament to the commitment of Ilonggos in ensuring that everyone is fed, especially during the two-week period of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). Donations of chicken, pork, vegetables, bihon (noodles), and other essential ingredients continue to pour in to support the preparation of meals.

To date, a total of 240 UCKs have been established in daycare centers and barangay halls. These facilities are managed by Supplemental Feeding (SF) workers, volunteer Blue Angels coordinators, and daycare workers, who diligently prepare and deliver meals for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Mary Grace Centino, the Point Person and manager of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), partnered with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), which oversees the SF and daycare workers. Together, they have successfully served a remarkable 2,570,042 meals to all 180 barangays as of August 2021. Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and his daughter Raisa are acknowledged for their instrumental role in this initiative.

In addition to catering to local communities, the UCK has also extended its assistance to stranded individuals and the Badjaos, a marginalized group in need. The total number of meals distributed in a single day can reach up to 30,000, showcasing the immense impact of this program.

During this global health crisis, it is crucial to demonstrate the value of humanity through acts of kindness and generosity. As Centino aptly stated, “Indeed, it is better to give than to receive.” The unity of the people of Iloilo City is exemplified through their unwavering support for one another.
