The Iloilo City Government, through the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO), is actively engaged in the renovation of district markets, emphasizing convenience and enhanced economic activities. A series of coordination meetings have been conducted with SM Prime Holdings, as the redevelopment of the Central and Terminal Markets is being pursued through a public-private partnership. Under the leadership of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, efforts have been initiated to improve market facilities and services.
To facilitate the renovation process, Central Market vendors have already begun relocating to 650 temporary stalls nearby, with the demolition of the old structure scheduled to commence on May 16. Similarly, Terminal Market or Super vendors have until May 31 to transfer to 1,113 stalls, as demolition is set to begin on June 1. Throughout the consultations, vendors have been assured that there will be no increase in rental fees, as the LEEO will continue to manage the markets. Concerns regarding stall positioning, traffic management, water and electricity requirements have also been addressed.
According to Maricel Mabaquiao, head of LEEO, the redevelopment of the markets is a necessary step forward for the urbanized city of Iloilo. The aim is to create a clean, orderly, and competitive public market that will not only elevate the city but also attract more tourists and consumers. The planned improvements encompass various aspects such as efficient goods delivery, ample parking spaces, enhanced security through the installation of cameras, improved restroom facilities, effective solid waste management, wastewater treatment, and a reliable drainage system.
To ensure the success of these projects, LEEO has been collaborating with several offices and entities, including the City Planning Office, City Legal Office, City Engineer’s Office, City Architect’s Office, Public Safety and Transportation Management Office, City Mayor’s Office, Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office, Office of Councilor Ely Estante, Department of Public Works and Highways, MORE Power, and Metro Pacific Iloilo Water.
Significant progress has already been made, with the installation of approximately 250 stalls in La Paz Public Market, 122 stalls in Jaro Big Market, 180 stalls in Arevalo Public Market, and 110 stalls in Mandurriao Public Market.
Ultimately, the redeveloped markets will provide a convenient space for commerce, offering improved facilities that will enhance the income potentials of Ilonggos and create better opportunities for vendors. These initiatives are aligned with the city’s W.H.E.E.L.S program, a comprehensive approach to inclusive development focusing on Welfare, Health, Education, Environment, Livelihood, and Sustainability.
