I-BIKE
The i-Bike project in Iloilo City is an innovative initiative that focuses on promoting sustainable transportation through biking. It gained recognition by winning the Galing Pook Award, a prestigious award in the Philippines that acknowledges outstanding local governance programs.
The project was launched by the Iloilo City government to address transportation challenges, reduce traffic congestion, and promote a healthier and more environmentally friendly mode of commuting. It introduced bike-friendly infrastructure, including dedicated bike lanes, parking facilities, and bike-sharing programs, to encourage residents and visitors to choose cycling as an alternative means of transportation.
It establishes a significant connection to gastronomy by promoting sustainable and gastronomic tourism experiences. As part of the project, bike-friendly infrastructure and routes are developed throughout the city, allowing residents and tourists to explore Iloilo’s culinary delights on two wheels.
By embracing the project, locals and visitors can easily navigate through Iloilo’s vibrant food scene, discovering hidden culinary gems and popular gastronomic destinations. The bike-friendly routes provide access to various food districts, street food stalls, local markets, and renowned restaurants, enabling individuals to immerse themselves in the city’s gastronomic offerings.
Additionally, it supports the concept of “food tourism” where travelers are encouraged to explore a destination’s unique food culture and traditions. With bicycles as a sustainable mode of transportation, tourists can embark on gastronomic adventures, sampling local delicacies, experiencing traditional cooking techniques, and engaging with food artisans and vendors.
Moreover, the i-Bike project aligns with sustainable development goals by promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives. By encouraging cycling as a means of exploring the city, Iloilo reduces carbon emissions and supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
